Youth in grades 7-8 (sometimes including youth in grades 6 or 9) meet with the pastor once a week on Sunday at 5 p.m. for confirmation class. The two-year program includes instruction in the content of the Bible and Martin Luther's Small Catechism. This leads to the Rite of Confirmation on a suitable liturgical day, such as Pentecost.
Immanuel provides a youth group for middle school and high school youth. Under the leadership of Laura McDaniel and the guidance and support of the congregation's Youth Advisory Board, the group enjoys fun and games as well as serious stuff such as hosting the annual Indoor Farmers' Market at Immanuel on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, service projects for the congregation, and servants trips. Every three years high school members of the youth group attend the ELCA Youth Gathering. The last gathering was in New Orleans July 22-26, 2009.
Immanuel has a small but vibrant Sunday School for children between the ages of 3 and sixth grade. Sunday School begins in the choir room at 9:15 a.m., where Cantor Elizabeth Bennett teaches songs to the children. They then divide to work with their teachers in age-specific classes (pre-school-kindergarten, grades 1-3, grades 4-6). Our Sunday School superintendent is Laura McDaniel and we are gifted with energetic and creative teachers.
